You always want to be sure that you are getting a good deal, especially if you are investing in an up and coming technology like LED replacement bulbs. While they invariably save you thousands of dollars on electricity bills over the years, they do not come at a low initial price. Don’t be scared of making the transition as long as you understand the key differences of LED compared to fluorescent.
Most people expect the bulbs in their lamps or ceiling fan fixtures to last around a year, or on average, one thousand hours. It is also easy to tell when it is time to replace an old bulb because it will simply stop working at the end of its service life instead of slowly dimming out over time. LED, on the other hand, can last years on end, upwards of thirty thousand hours, and will dim instead of burning out.
That can be read as either a positive or negative attribute. While you certainly hate to lose illumination over time, it is much better to notice a duller light than it is to have a bulb that will suddenly burn out and not work at all. Fluorescent bulbs are cheap and easy to have stowed away, but LED is expensive and may prove to cost prohibitive to have a large stash in the garage.
Once you notice your LED bulb beginning to dim, you have plenty of time to save up some money and order a new one. You do not need to worry about sitting in the dark until you have a chance to get to your local hardware store. They also provide greater surface lighting, unlike older bulbs that point directional light and create and unwanted amount of shadows in your home.
